Our client featured in this environmental business portraits blog post is an engineering firm that I’ve worked with on several occasions over the past two years. The first time was when their Rockville, Maryland office needed new business portraits; at that time, they asked for standard, studio-style headshots on a grey backdrop. The second time they contacted me, it was because their corporate office had acquired a new location near Baltimore, and wanted both grey backdrop headshots AND an environmental portrait for select employees (see the blog post from that business portrait session). Well, the Rockville office oversaw this process and loved the environmental portrait concept so much that asked me to come back to Rockville to create an environmental portrait for some of their people too! Now, I enjoy doing standard headshots, but I love the environmental portrait for the creativity that it allows.
This first environmental business portrait set below is one of my favorites. The rolls of engineering drafts that serve as a backdrop really say a lot about this man’s business and help to portray him in “his” world. Before arriving at their office, I didn’t know that I would be creating this particular image. The first thing I do when arriving at an office is walk around the entire office to see what kind of backdrops I can use, and where the best places for photography will be. We never stay in one location in the office when creating an environmental business portrait series. After all, the point with the environmental business portrait is to be unique, creative, and above all, different.
This is the firm’s marketing director. I photographed her in the reception area. She’s actually perched with one leg on the receptionist’s desk and another leg on the receptionist’s chair. The little things that are hanging down around her are actually little light fixtures lighting the receptionist’s desk. Unique design element, isn’t it? The doorframe of the glass doors behind her frame her nicely in these business portraits.
This is a new member of the team that joined after my first visit to the Rockville office, so he was the only one that I hadn’t photographed in the past. In the first image, I have him standing in a hallway, and in the second image, he’s standing against a white board.
The environmental business portrait series below, I also created in the reception area. This time, I posed my subject on the other side of the receptionist’s desk so that the glass entry doors were in the background, with light shining through from the elevator area outside.
Another environmental portrait series created in a hallway – this time a different hallway in the office for a different look.
Bookshelves filled with books always make good backdrops for an environmental portrait series.
