Gabriella Keyes, founder of the chic and stylish Eunoia Beauty Bar in Gaithersburg, MD (who, by the way, was the fab makeup artist & hair stylist behind our December headshot mini-marathon and our upcoming spring headshot mini-marathon). This time, she approached me about creative environmental headshots for herself as the salon owner as well as headshots for six women that she had lined up to be models. She wanted to create some after photographs of the six women to showcase different styles of makeup artistry and hair styling. Read on to learn about the thought behind the looks in this guest post by Gabriella!
“I want to look like myself, but better!”
is what the majority of my guests request. Hair and makeup is anything but one size fits all, which means that this request will look and feel so different from client to client. So essentially what I’m hearing from you is that you want to look your absolute best without looking like you’ve been spackled and sprayed to death. I hear you loud and clear!
On a normal work day, to get a feel for what you want, I’d ask you questions about what your day to day makeup and hair routine looks like. Do you fill in your eyebrows? Do you like bottom eyeliner? How bold do you like your lips? Where do you part your hair? Volume? Do you want something natural or something more timeless? But on a day like today, it’s my chance to fully let my artistic side shine! No questions asked, just do.
Because I’m stuck behind the salon chair most days, sometimes I find myself in this creative box. So on days like today, I can bust out of that box and do what my creative and free thinking mind guides me to do. Today I lined up 6 models of varying skin tones, styles, and aesthetics. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with each model; the girl next door, the aesthetically pleasing grunge rockstar, and the elegant, sophisticated women. I wanted to push my envelope all while showing that I can do many styles.
First up was model number one! Megan has long, beautiful, Rapunzel hair with fun color and texture. She also has a very delicate face, so I automatically knew that I wanted her hair completely up and out of her face. I decided to let her hair be the center of attention for this look, so I did a very soft, natural makeup on her to ensure that I didn’t take away from the drama of her hair. I chose to do a play on a Mohawk, which helped to elongate her already slender figure. I finished her look with pearls because the “timeless fashion” lover in me agrees with Jackie Kennedy when she said, ”Pearls are always appropriate”.
Speaking of pearls, you’ll see that I chose pearls on Julie’s look too. To me, there’s just something about the simplicity of having a full nude lip, voluminous lashes and a simple pony that I take pleasure in.
I also chose to stick with a more simplistic look on my model, Jasmine. Jasmine has my ideal eyelid when it comes to showing off eye detail (deep set eyes and a smooth lid). I used one of my favorite day to day eyeshadow pallets: Tartlet by Tarte. It has the perfect combination of shades that really help to enhance every skin tones natural beauty (this is one of my FAVORITE makeup pallets for weddings!).
Taylor has that ”Girl next door” look to her, so I decided to go with it. I chose to use a B.B. cream on her because I didn’t want to completely cancel out her gorgeous freckles. A couple loosely done braids layered one on top of the other and a few natural wisps around the face to give it that effortless look, and she was finished.
Brittney, my next model, also gave me that sweet and innocent feel. Lately, I’ve been loving playing with deep reds and burgundy on the eyes. I chose to use my Heat pallet by Urban Decay to create a single colored lid. The reds really helped to accentuate the natural gold in her skin tone.
And lastly we have Sam. Sam has beautiful fair skin with naturally dark features. She also has this dark mullet that I cut for her a few weeks back. I decided to really go for it on her. A dark Smokey eye was the focal point for her look paired with dewy, radiant skin. A few spritzes of sea salt spray scrunched in her hair to create texture and I was staring at the modern day Joan Jett!
My models did an exceptional job at showing out in front of the camera and with the guidance and natural eye for photography, Irene captured my vision fully. Six models with six very unique looks show their individual personalities.
As I unplug my flat irons and close up my makeup kit, I think to myself how today was a complete success. It was mentally exhausting but worth every long hour that was put in.
